Solar Quote Red Flags in Malaysia

Warning signs to investigate before a low price, big savings claim or urgent deadline makes the decision for you.

Quick links

A solar quote should make it easier to make a decision. If it makes the system, the scope or the terms harder to understand, slow down. A red flag is not always proof of a bad provider, but it is a reason to ask for a clearer written answer.

Vague equipment descriptions

A quote that says only “high-efficiency panels” or “premium inverter” does not tell you what is being installed. You should be able to identify the panel and inverter model, capacity, number of panels and the main balance-of-system equipment.

Ask for a revised proposal if there is no model-level equipment list. This is a normal request, not an unreasonable one.

Big savings claims with no assumptions

Solar can reduce the electricity you buy from the grid, but bill outcomes depend on system generation, household use, tariff, weather and the applicable programme. Treat a large percentage saving as an illustration until you see the assumptions behind it.

  • What annual generation is estimated?
  • How much of that generation is assumed to be used at the home?
  • What electricity-use and tariff assumptions are used?
  • Is the figure a guarantee, estimate or marketing example?

Missing scope, exclusions or site conditions

The total price is not enough if the quote does not say what happens when roof access, cabling, switchboard work or roof repairs need attention. A clear installer explains what is included, what is excluded and how an unexpected site issue would be approved and priced.

Red flagBetter standard
“Everything included” with no scope listA written list of installation, electrical, application and handover work.
Unexplained “from” priceA price tied to a defined system and stated site assumptions.
Verbal promise on extra workWritten variation process and homeowner approval before cost changes.
No handover detailClear record of manuals, monitoring access and warranty documents.

One headline warranty hiding several different terms

Panels, inverters and workmanship do not necessarily have the same warranty. A proposal should identify each term, who provides it and how a claim is started. Be cautious when a quote uses a long number without explaining whether it applies to the product, expected performance, installation workmanship or an optional service plan.

Pressure to pay before the details are clear

Time-limited offers can be real, but urgency should not replace documentation. Do not make a payment just because you are told a programme, price or installation slot will disappear unless you can see the terms and understand the commitment.

No clear path to verify the provider

SEDA advises homeowners to choose a registered PV service provider. Check the current official directory and make sure the legal company details on the proposal match the provider you are dealing with. Registration does not replace reading the contract, but it is a basic first check.

The bottom line

A trustworthy proposal welcomes sensible questions. If the answer is vague, rushed or only verbal, ask for it in writing before moving forward.
