Advantages of Solar PV System as endorsed by SEDA Malaysia

According to Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA), only 2% of electricity is generated by renewable energy sources in Malaysia, which means that most Malaysian are still relying on the limited fossil fuel resources such as oil, coal or natural gas, which is hazardous to our environment.

“Starting 1st January 2019, Malaysians who use solar power will enjoy the cheaper electricity bill under Net Energy Metering (NEM).”

– Yeo Bee Yin, Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC)

In other words, the government has begun a movement in persuading Malaysians to install Solar Photovoltaic (PV) System as there are lots of advantages not only for personal, but also for environmental and economic. Therefore, the NEM programme is announced to encourage Malaysians to install Solar PV System.

What is Net Energy Metering (NEM)?

NEM enables users to generate and consume their own electricity by Solar PV System, and any excess electricity produced by Solar PV System can be offset “one-on-one” basis.

For example, Encik Ridwan’s House Solar PV System generates 500kWh electricity monthly. Encik Ridwan’s monthly household electricity usage is 1050kWH.

Here’s how NEM solves the problem: it calculates the net energy a house used, deducting the energy generated via PV System. In other words, En Ridwan uses a total of 1050kWh electricity, he just needs to pay the net energy (1050kWh – 500kWh = 550kWh).

Here are the powerful benefits of Solar PV System as endorsed by SEDA Malaysia:

1.Reduce electricity cost

As I mentioned in NEM, this programme helps to reduce our electricity cost because the electricity produced is directly deducted from the total electricity used, then the net energy will be using the TNB electricity tariff formula to calculate the total electricity bill.

For example, your current monthly electricity bill is RM542. After installing 8.16kWp Solar PV System to generate electricity and consume it, your monthly bill will be calculated by the TNB electricity tariff rate, and it is RM 77 only for your bill, which means that you totally save RM465!

2.Save more in the future

Our electricity tariff rate is currently at 57.1cents/kWh. Compared to 13 years ago, there has been 83% hike. Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has yet to impose changes on electricity tariff rate for the past 6 years! Who can ensure it won’t increase in the coming years?

3.Environmentally friendly

Our limited fossil fuel resources are depleting, yet people still have high reliance on them. The conventional electricity is produced by burning fossil fuels, which not only creates air and water pollution, but also releases greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere that is damaging our mother Earth!

Therefore, we advocate the use of solar energy which is a free source available daily! There is no harm of using solar energy!
