Solar Power: 4 Pros and Cons

When we talk about solar power, what is the first thing that comes to mind?

The Sun?

An advanced technology that you may have to learn about?

A product?

You may be partially right, but before we get into this, here’s a basic understanding of what solar power means. Solar power is a renewable energy source that harnesses the energy of the sun to generate electricity. It works by converting sunlight into electrical energy using solar panels or photovoltaic (PV) cells. These cells are made up of semiconductor materials, such as silicon, which absorb photons of sunlight and release electrons, generating an electric current.

It’s worth noting that Malaysia has a good amount of sunlight throughout the year, which can help maximise the energy production of a solar panel system. Additionally, the Malaysian government has implemented various incentives and programmes to encourage the adoption of solar energy, such as the Net Energy Metering (NEM) programme and the Green Investment Tax Allowance (GITA) scheme, which can help improve the financial viability of investing in solar.

Solar Power System

Solar power systems can be installed on rooftops, in open fields, or in solar power plants to generate electricity for homes, businesses, and communities. Solar power is a clean and sustainable source of energy. It also offers a degree of independence from the electricity grid, providing a reliable source of energy during power outages or emergencies.

Now let’s talk about the pros of solar power:

Renewable and clean

Solar power is a renewable energy source that does not produce any harmful emissions, making it a clean and sustainable source of energy. By installing solar panels, you are contributing to a greener environment and reducing your carbon footprint. Buyers who prioritise sustainability and environmental consciousness may be willing to pay a premium for a home that already has solar panels installed. Isn’t that awesome?

Reduces electricity bills

By generating your electricity through solar power, you can significantly reduce your monthly electricity bills. By producing your electricity, you become less reliant on the grid and can save money in the long run. Did you know that this added benefit ALSO increases your home value? It does!

Low maintenance

Solar panels require very little maintenance and have a lifespan of over 25 years.

Increases property value:

Installing solar panels can increase the value of your property, making it a worthwhile investment in the long run. By producing your electricity, you become less reliant on the grid and can save money in the long run. This added benefit can make your home more attractive to potential buyers and increase its value.

Here’s just a reminder for all of you.

Solar-powered homes have a positive marketing appeal. Here’s why. Homes with solar panels have a unique selling point that can differentiate them from other homes on the market. By advertising the energy savings, environmental benefits, and long-term investment potential, you can attract buyers who are looking for a home that is both practical and eco-friendly.

Now let’s talk about the cons of solar power:

High upfront cost

The initial cost of purchasing and installing solar panels can be quite high, making it a significant investment.

Weather dependent

Solar power generation is dependent on sunlight, which can be limited by cloudy days or nighttime, making it less reliable compared to other sources of energy.

Requires space

Solar panels require a significant amount of space to install, which may not be feasible for small homes or apartments.

Manufacturing and disposal

The manufacturing and disposal of solar panels can have environmental impacts if not done properly, making it important to ensure sustainable practices are in place.

Overall, solar power is a promising source of clean and renewable energy, but it may not be suitable for every situation. Before deciding to install solar power, or rather, solar panels, you must consult with trustworthy people or professionals who are experienced in this field of solar.
